Good question Julius.
I think that the filters on the camera have aged over the years and they have also their transmission "polluted" by the accumulated dust on the camera.
The landscape should not look as "bland" and color-saturated as it is shown sometimes and show much subtles differences in color.
For example, I've used an old technique, called "grey balance" or "white balance" (please, see the related posts on MSL/Curiosity section) and I found the rocks here to be really grey colored.
The rest of the landscape should show subtles color variations and this is why I think that my interpretation is close to what an human eye would see...
