Full Version: Pool: Arrival if Oppy at Beagle Crater

RNeuhaus
This is a new pool, similar to Victoria Crater arrival bets.
Now Oppy is still around between 2 to 4 weeks away from Beagle Crater so the bet must, tentatively, be closed by next Wednesday.

My bet of Oppy arrival at Beagle crater is: Sol 877 (July 12).

Edit: this date is reasonable based on the average distance covered in last two weeks (close to 20m/Sol) unless they completely stop Oppy for new navigation program upload... sad.gif

Dilo,
july 9 will also be the day of the final of the Soccer World Cup where we still have the possibility of an Italy-France match. So I go for july 9 + 11 days = july 20th (also another known "birthday" tongue.gif ) i.e. sol 885 (also called D-50 to VC). Good luck!

Mmm...the dunes still scare me, and they appear both taller and more numerous lately, so I'll bet that additional caution will be exercised by the drivers in the near future. Put me down for Sol 906.

I'll go for sol 882, just a guess based on a quick look at Tesheiner's route map and Oppy's driving so far.

I think that this case, so close to the BC arrival, so the bet dates may repeat and not unique as this has happened to the pool to VC. How do you think about that rule? There still time until next wednesday night (12:00 am New York Time).

Rodolfo, there's a missunderstanding! HAL_9000 told me that Brasil will win the Soccer World Cup and I replies (oh Yes) on sol 1233! My bet is 885 at Beagle
About the rule : what about first shot of center of the interior of Beagle ?

The actual forecast of Oppy, everything is going cool as planned. The route is becoming easier, with wider crest of ripples. The deadline is still away until this Wednesday midnight

I fear that both the pools will come to a teary and griefstricken end, if people don't settle on fireproof Definitions of Arrival pretty soon.
djellison
Arrival has already been defined as the first sol during which the rover is at the site & drive number where the 'big' pancam sequence for that target is taken.

....not trying to be funny here, but how do we define "at the site".

EDIT: NEVER MIND I DIDN"T READ THAT CAREFULLY.

...not to drop out of the race without ever getting registered!

i committed to SOL 876 (and indirectly spawned this thread i like to believe!) in my posting from June 23rd:
http://www.unmannedspaceflight.com/index.p...amp;#entry59592

i still think were on target for SOL 876

i'd considered arrival 'at the site' would mean we are essentially at the lip or close enough as we are going to get witout signifficant legwork. the point at which we would be able to see enough that the descision will be made where to go next to check out crater details. one major consideration would be if we can see the bulk of the interior floor of Beagle.

Um, mine was 882. Thanks.

884. And for arrival criteria: arrival at panorama site is fine by me...

Slightly off topic - but for me, the arrival at Beagle will represent a significant milestone in the effort to reach Victoria. I would almost say that we would have arrrived at the outskirts- and the investigation/exploration of Victoria and surrounding terrain will have begun.

Yes that Beagon Crater is a outskirt of VC or the other words, it is part of the VC arpon. However, the bet has two different places and times. So, everybody (I hope we won't be dissapointed if Oppy will divert to VC before reaching at BC) are sure that Oppy will arrive at BC so we are playing with a new bet. smile.gif

Point-of-Definition: You have ARRIVED at a crater when you can image the center of the floor. Agreed, "hanging 10" over the edge is best, but seeing at least half of the bottom is what pretty much counts.

A favorite photo from Spirit was taken <Navcam, only, I think> from the rim of Bonneville. They were some 15 (maybe) feet back from the rim, but you could suddenly see a good chunk of the far rim and a good bit of the upper half of the far wall. You just knew the next day's drive and download was going to result in a lot of "Oh WOW!"s.
djellison
Nope. 'Arrival' has already been defined. There is no ambiguity.

The first sol that includes the site and drive number at which the big 'pan' of the target is taken.

I'm not taking part in this particular episode of pool-fettishism that's taking over (and I'm essentially pulling out of the same one in Victoria), specifically so I can wrap it up very rapidly with a discreet, specific sol number without claims of fixing it so I win.

The definiition has been written for some time already, it's not getting changed.

If it's not too late, please add my bet for sol 876.
Six driving sols on 864, 867, 869, 871, 874, and finally 876.
