Easy to think of biotic process that could form the grey layer. What type of abiotic processes would lead to this? Speculation from anyone?

Given the apparent light colour of the rock are we looking at leucobasalt? In which case I guess this could be an alteration product of plagioclase ie Fe oxyhydroxide.

NavCam 360 degree mosaic from Sol 1247 with a large version link. Heading SSW and up in elevation. We're near the western edge of this earlier map from tau. With future drives it will be interesting to see a transition from a northward facing slope to eastward facing.

Extended drive animation from Sol 387 to the present.

Here's a blinking animation between Sols 1230 and 1247. This time south is in the center to give a better idea of the direction we're heading. Interesting to track the migration of the 3 hills near the center (generally south) in Sol 1230. They are much more separated in azimuth in Sol 1247. The biggest hill to the SW (right of center) stays about the same azimuth. The other two hills move toward the left and lower in elevation angle between the two frames.

The terrain ahead is shown nicely in this dynamic ESA map. Thus far we've climbed 60 meters from the Neretva Vallis floor.

Thanks everyone for the panoramas! The view back down to Neretva Vallis and the delta is already stunning. Time for a new thread, as we transition from the margin to the rim?

Yes, I would say the crater rim is a new thread.

NavCam 360 degree mosaic from Sol 1220 with a large version link. This is in the middle of Neretva Vallis helping to fill in the animation heading south.

On another note here's a Science News story about the Cheyava Falls sample composition and its motivation for the sample return mission, and a link to this Juiy conference with quite a few abstracts having more details.
