I stumbled upon this neat little movie over the holidays,

http://www.amazon.com/Mars-HD-Mark-Duplass...p;keywords=mars

It is simply titled, "Mars", so I'm hoping I'm not creating a new thread on the topic, but searching this website for that topic is unlikely to be productive smile.gif

The movie seems like something which would appeal to many (perhaps most) of the people here at UMSF. It is animated very realistically (rotoscoped), kind of like Archer. Animations of spacecraft launches and especially entry/descent/landing on Mars are amazingly detailed, similar to what we've seen done with MER and Curiosity. There's quite a diverse plot involving the response to discovering life on Mars, with references to the Beagle II mission, lot's of "in" humor that UMSF'ers will appreciate, and Kinky Friedman as president of the USA (it was filmed in Austin, TX). Gently humorous, with surprisingly good acting, and some intentionally bad science -- so be prepared to suspend disbelief in places -- it borders on cartoonish in spots towards the end. Reviews are a bit mixed, probably because this movie will appeal to a rather narrow audience. Worth a look.

I did a little search and for a moment had your suggestion mixed up with another film.
The film you suggested is in fact from 2010.

I'd noticed that -- Wikipedia also showed 2010, but I decided to go with the Amazon number -- which I suppose may be when they acquired it, or perhaps it's the difference between theatrical release and consumer release.

This movie has gotten me to thinking about the variety of reviews that various movies get. It would really be nice if it were possible to identify reviewers similar to myself (giving similar reviews on similar movies), and provide movie rankings (to me) per those reviews/ratings. I'd assume that Amazon's recommendations are based upon something like this. A 1-star review from someone who hates sci-fi movies is useless to me smile.gif
