I fetched the raw images from HST of pluto, taken in 1994. There is a set taken through a 342 nm filter and some taken through 550 nm. I did a rough color combination, after overlaying Pluto and Charon correctly (Charon moved noticeably in its orbit during the time between pictures).

This is blown up 2x with a windowed sinc filter.

Nicely done, one can see the colour difference between the two. I believe there are also some raws for Xena and Gabrielle too. Worth trying, perhaps?

Was this done using the original FITS format images?

This was done with the 16-bit FITS images. Color coding is not accurate thought. I just put the 342 nm image into the blue plane, and the 550 image into the red and green planes.
