Full Version: Kuiper Belt full of cometoids?

Hi All

The Australian ABC posted this story on Wednesday...

Kuiper Belt is a busy place...

George Georgevits, Associate Professor Michael Ashley, both of UNSW and Dr Will Saunders of the AAO say they have found evidence of many objects ranging in size from 300 metres to one kilometre across using the 6DF instrument on the UK Schmidt telescope at Siding Spring. Basically they have evidence of over 100 occultation events, consistent with KBOs, over their period of observation.

So the Kuiper Belt could be full of 'junk' - collision fragments, most likely, that get perturbed into Neptune crossing orbits eventually by their bigger cousins.

How can they be sure that KBO's are causing that occultations?
Anything can occult the star...birds...satellites...space junk...Superman...
If it is asteroid that occulted the star how can they be sure it is KBO and not just any asteroid (Centaur)?
Anyway, if this turns out to be truth it is good news for New Horizons.

I would hope and assume that astronomers would be able to figure out relatively easily if the source of the occultation was more local than the Kupier Belt. smile.gif
