Go to marsnews.com and find a link to translate the webpage with babelfish in the lowerright corner. Click the German flag and be amazed. It helps if you can read German but ... not a lot. If you still haven't guessed it: GeistVagabund is BabelFish German for Spirit Rover!

In French it is not bad either: "esprit vagabond" (wandering mind) makes think to some wandering ermit or yogi. That gives a poetical touch to the story...
