QUOTE The new software [...] includes a series of upgrades that improve signal reception and on-board data processing to increase the amount and quality of science data sent to Earth [...] “By discarding data that we don’t need [on-board], the new software allows us to switch MARSIS on for five times as long and explore a much larger area with each pass.”

This week, on September 23rd at around 00:24:38 UTC, Mars Express will make a flyby of Phobos with a closest approach distance of about 94 km. This will be the first opportunity to use the new Sub Surface Phobos (SSP) operating mode of the MARSIS (Mars Advanced Radar for Subsurface and Ionosphere Sounding) instrument.

Finally, about a month after the event, ESA's PR people take notice of the latest close Mars Express flyby of Phobos.

Finally, about a month after the event, ESA's PR people take notice of the latest close Mars Express flyby of Phobos. Thanks Bobik for this nice info Well... They did not "take notice". Please, be so kind to note that radar data interpretation is difficult, and especially after some changes were made in softwares. Remember that observations of Ganymede made by Juno came out at least 6 months after they were made. So, we should be happy with the time schedule of this press release |
