I'm on Twitter/X @tedstryk (for now at least)
The following accounts are ones I don't use much but would if a community developed. I am also @tedstryk on Threads and Bluesky. I am @tedstryk.mastadon.social and @tedstryk on Discord.

I am @tedstryk on Instagram, but I only use that account for pictures from my personal life.

QUOTE (mcaplinger @ Oct 2 2024, 07:41 PM) *
I don't know what happens in the paywalled "L2" area but I don't know of anything specific to planetary. From what's implied, people posting there, if they have real inside information, are breaking their project rules of the road at a minimum, if they're not guilty of actual ITAR/EAR violations. IMHO even some of the stuff posted in the public areas (by one NASA insider in particular) is skirting the rules.

So in that regard it's a good source of information, although the SNR is extremely low (mostly from fanboys of a company with X in its name). I've more or less given up posting there (pearls before swine, as they say.) YMMV.

Yes, NSF has got nowhere near the S/N ratio of this forum. In terms of L2 content, you're not really missing out on much, it's mostly a few regular NASA/industry insiders giving a heads-up on something that'll (probably) become public some time later, anyways. I don't think I've seen violations of ITAR and such over my stay there (not that I really know how strict ITAR really is), the OG posters themselves are aware of just how much info they can share so it's usually carefully worded. I get the impression the creator of the site gets even more info than what those L2 insiders provide, but is threading the needle of not posting too much sensitive/proprietary info.

In general, NSF is a much more rocket-oriented than a science-oriented site like UMSF, even though they do have a Space Science section. I'm glad I see some of the folks around here posting there, like Phil Stooke and vjkane.
Sad part is, for example for Juno Galilean flybys, all I could really do there is link to UMSF image wizards' posts here. Not sure how that'll work out in the future.

I'd say the site could have had the potential of carrying on the torch of UMSF, were it not for those very same fanboys (not just of the X company).

Good show, John! It's not the same but will do for now and may serve to keep people together until a more suitable solution emerges. I will post things there and (for lunar missions) on NSF and on Mastodon (link in sig)

I'm now on Discord.
I'm also on Twitter/X as @bjorn_jons but I have been rather inactive there recently.

I have also been (mainly) lurking in the OpenPlanetary community on Slack, see https://www.openplanetary.org/ . There is useful information there for advanced image processing amateurs (for me it's been SPICE, ISIS3 and PDS in particular). There is also an OpenPlanetary forum/discussion board but it's been rather inactive.

I might also join Mastodon, Bluesky (or something else) if an image processing community develops there.

I'm also on Facebook but I rarely use it for space-related stuff. When I do it's usually non-technical.

Do you have a link to select through Sol the images that you assembled and reworked? I have already used some in volume 2 (including that of Sol 1000)

I'll look at the discord site and may join that.

Otherwise all I participate in that's vaguely related is Cloudy Nights as timelapser (you may recognize my avatar image). That's mostly amateur astronomy and has only one rather sad forum related to space exploration.
