Tim were the ripple blocks transported by flows from higher up or formed in the channel? I believe it is thought the sulfur nodules nearby were formed in situ in process possibly involving hydrogen sulfide, water and possibly organics. Can you tell us your thoughts, or that you have thoughts but can't share them at this time? Thanks, Floyd Good question! The channel seems to be filled with blocks of various lithology, possibly separated by a finer-grained matrix. Could be debris flows that were the final channel fill. The channel also seems to have been exhumed: first buried and then exhumed by eons of wind erosion. The channel may have carried water and lower concentrations of sediment as suspended and bed load down into the crater, then was filled by debris flows and buried by subsequent aeolian deposition. The entire stack of sediments seems to be characterized by periods of aggradation and degradation, and we see the spectacular stratigraphy in the canyon because of the current period of landscape degradation. -------------------- Tim Demko

This is Jan's panorama for sol 4312 in circular form. I thought we would be going around that little trough but here we are right in it.
