Today's (July 18, 2024) sunspot number https://spaceweather.com/glossary/sunspotnumber.html is currently 275, the highest value for Solar Cycle 25.

Multiple CME's heading our way. Possible G3-class geomagnetic storm (s) on July 30th and 31st. Mid-latitude auroras visible from Europe and the USA are possible.

The sun continues to be peppered with complex sunspots with counts rivaling those seen in Solar Cycle 23, 23 years ago. G2 geomagnetic storms may occur on the third of August.

The strongest X-ray flare (X-9.1-category) of cycle 25 has been observed by the Solar Dynamic Observatory today. This was associated with complex sunspot AR3842 and a halo CME and is expected to produce a geomagnetic storm on Oct. 6.

Today's SOHO C3 movie https://soho.nascom.nasa.gov/data/Theater/ shines in this view of a massive CME (from an X class solar flare yesterday) and the bright comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS near the sun. The CME may bend or shear off the comet's tail and a G4 geomagnetic storm is forecast for late Oct 10.

There is a new eye on the Sun, the Compact Coronagraph-1, an instrument on NOAA’s new GOES-U/-19 satellite. This instrument will provide an image of the corona every 15 minutes in order to detect and characterize coronal mass ejections (CMEs) for space weather forecasting. See details here: https://www.nesdis.noaa.gov/news/new-corona...her-forecasting
